Walmart Plus: What Is It and How Does It Work?

If their current offerings weren’t great enough, Walmart is now set to launch Walmart Plus. Walmart is now set to launch Walmart Plus. A subscription program that adds more convenience to a consumer’s daily routine.

Walmart is one of the largest companies in all of the country as it offers an array of convenient products at competitive and affordable prices. With it also being so easily accessible to the majority of the nation’s population, it’s hard to stray away from it when it comes to fulfilling your immediate needs.

If their current offerings weren’t great enough, Walmart is now set to launch Walmart Plus. This is a membership program that only plans on adding even more convenience to the modern consumer’s daily routine. We’ll go into more detail on how to define it, what it entails, and why it has officially been announced to arrive into existence.

Let’s get started!

Let’s Define Walmart Plus

Walmart Plus is a new membership program, there’s much more to it than that. This program has been made to provide in-store and online benefits, and it provides ways for consumers to save even more money. Some of the major perks include unlimited free delivery from stores and fuel discounts from certain gas stations. Plus, there will be savings on tech, beauty and sports products.

Consumers will officially begin to have access on September 15 where they’ll be able to sign up. If anyone is hesitant to commit to a membership, then there is a free 15-day trial period that consumers can take part in first. Otherwise, the service is $98 per year or $12.95 per month. For those who are already enrolled in Walmart’s Delivery Unlimited service, they will automatically be transferred over to Walmart Plus.

Walmart Plus Is a Direct Competitor to Amazon Prime

Amazon is a direct competitor for Walmart, so with the rollout of Walmart Plus, there is, even more, to offer and ultimately use to compete. Amazon is currently dominating with a total of 38 percent of all online sales. Walmart is in line at second place but is much more distant with a total of 5 percent of all online sales.

Walmart has made other notable attempts to compete with Amazon in the past too. In fact, the company introduced ShippingPass in 2015. This was created as an unlimited online shipping service that would cost consumers $50 per year. Walmart also guaranteed the deliveries to be completed within three days or less.

Since this program didn’t have the same competitive weight as Amazon, they then dropped the membership fee and switched to free 2-day shipping on orders of $35 or less. This new method is more pleasing to the consumer and can be competitive to other brands such as Target.

In 2019, Amazon and Walmart continued with their competition when they both announced plans to offer 1-day shipping. Afterwards, Walmart tried to rise even higher in the competitive ranks by announcing a 2-hour express delivery service for an additional $10.

Hopefully with the release of this new membership program, Walmart will be able increase their online market share and have a more competitive advantage. Although stores such as Giant Eagle offer fuel perks, it still has yet to be said for Amazon. Benefits like this one may be what make this program more appealing than something such as Amazon Prime.

What are the Benefits of Walmart Plus?

Now that we know Walmart Plus will be officially dropping in the next few days, let’s look at all the cool new perks that will be offered to consumers. The following can also be directly compared to Amazon and the way they conduct their own membership program.

There is unlimited free delivery: Consumers that take part in the membership will receive fast, reliable same-day delivery on more than 160,000 items. They will include the following categories.

  • Tech
  • Toys
  • Household Essentials
  • Groceries

Take part in scan and go: Walmart will not only have a more competitive edge on an online platform, but also when they shop in the brick and mortar stores. When customers use the Walmart app, customers are able to scan their items while they shop around. They’re also able to pay using Walmart Pay for easy touch-free payment.

Take advantage of fuel discounts:  Anyone who is a part of Walmart Plus will be able to save up to five cents per gallon at nearly 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA and Murphy Express gas stations. Sam’s Club, Walmart’s sister store, will also have its fuel stations added to the list.

What perks are your favorite in the new Walmart Plus program? We’d love to know your thoughts and see what consumers and advertisers are most excited about when it comes to the innovation of this company.

Final Thoughts

With Walmart Plus being dropped for the consumption and ease of consumers, it’s adding to the competitive advantage so many businesses are seeking on a daily basis. Not only that, but Walmart is also the closest competitor to Amazon in the nation even though there is a wide gap between first and second place.

If you are an advertiser that’s representing brands advertising on Walmart, then this could be a great new program that will indirectly be able to increase sales. This is because there is an arguably better and more competitive program available for the convenience of shoppers. As time progresses and we see the overall effects of this new program take place, we’ll be able to develop a more secure analysis and the actions to take as a result.

What are your final thoughts on the release and activation of Walmart Plus? How do you think it will be able to help you as a business or a consumer? We’d love to hear what you’re thinking. Reach out to us if you’d like to speak with a Walmart ads agency.
